They correspond to the coding of nos fetish practices
which we know under the name of « Hanky Code »
WHAT IS THE HANKY CODE ?
At a time when flirting was an outdoor sport and dating sites did not exist
The “Hanky Code” developed in the United States
The origin differs depending on the sources - some speak of New York - others of San Francisco...
Still this code originated in the early 1970s in the US
The initial idea came from a joke by a New York journalist in one of his articles
“Rather than displaying your bunch of keys in the left or right pocket of your pants
- to indicate whether you are active or passive -
it would be more effective to place a piece of colored cloth there to indicate your preferences”
The gay community took hold of the idea and spread it widely
The “Hanky Code” had just seen the light of day
Originally composed of twelve colors representing the twelve most common practices
the code grew over time - sometimes becoming a bit confusing
There are in fact more than seventy colors
- with sometimes subtle nuances -
which today represent all the diversity of our sexual practices and our fetishes
Even if many colors have been forgotten today the classics and the easiest to identify remain very present especially in fetish clothing and accessories
